Individualized Patient Care
The doctors and staff of Bay Glen Animal Hospital treat each patient as a unique individual. We offer a variety of preventative health protocols to address each patient's personal needs. Our doctors focus on health promotion and disease prevention through client education, semi-annual Comprehensive Wellness Exams, and a series of early detection medical screenings. Our treatment protocols are specifically designed based on your cat or dog's age, breed, lifestyle, health status, and unique individual needs.

Comprehensive Wellness Exams and Blood Profiles
Our Comprehensive Wellness Exams are performed on a semi-annual schedule to help your pet to live a longer, healthier life. Because dogs and cats age much more quickly than humans, an exam that is performed only once a year is similar to you visiting your doctor every 6-8 years for a check-up. Annual blood profiles for pets of all ages assist in early detection of disease processes and proactive treatment plans.

Eye Exam And Screenings
An eye exam includes screening tests for glaucoma, cataracts, tear production, ulcers and injuries. Inadequate tear production or dry eyes is a common problem in dogs. It can cause infection, conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers, and scarring of the cornea. Glaucoma is another common disease. A small device called a Tonopen allows us to measure the intraocular pressure (the pressure inside the eye) as a screen for glaucoma in both dogs and cats. There are 42 dog breeds that are predisposed to glaucoma. The time to find it is before your pet's vision is affected. The test is quick and easy; requiring a couple drops of drops solution to temporarily numb the corneal surface, followed by a quick instrument reading. Results are instantaneous. The blindness which results from glaucoma is irreversible. Early detection and prevention are the keys!

Teeth, Tongue, Gums Exam And Cleaning
During a dental exam, our doctors examine your pet's teeth and gums for plaque, tartar and gingivitis. Loose or fractured teeth, tumors, infection and congenital malocclusion are also frequent findings. Poor dental health can cause pain, weight loss, liver, kidney, heart disease, and even death. 85% of pets over three (3) years of age suffer from some form of dental disease. We offer complete dental cleanings, tooth extractions, and oral surgery.

Cardiac, Blood Pressure, And Respiratory Check
Older pets often suffer from hypertension. Regular blood pressure screenings using our Doppler monitor can often detect problems and allow for medical management of this disease. By listening to the heart and lungs during a physical exam, the doctors can detect early symptoms of heart disease.

 |
Reproductive Organs
It is in your pet's best interest to be spayed or neutered. Early spaying and neutering helps to prevent many problems seen in older patients. Your pet's reproductive system will be examined for lumps, swelling, or discharge. Breast tumors, testicular cancer and prostate enlargement are common problems for older, unaltered pets. Responsible pet ownership includes prevention of unwanted litters and control of overpopulation.

Skin And Coat Analysis
A thorough check of your pet's coat and skin will give our doctors a good indication of your pet's overall health. They will look for growths and tumors, as well as signs of allergies, nutritional deficiencies, infections, fleas, ticks, and other parasites. Yeast and bacterial skin infections are very common due to our Gulf Coast climate. Many times using a prescription shampoo or medicated conditioner can help to control or treat these conditions. We maintain a wide selection of therapeutic shampoos and conditioners for your pet.

 |
Internal Parasites
We perform periodic fecal screenings for parasites such as roundworms, giardia, hookworms, tapeworms, and whipworms. Some parasites can be transmitted to humans, especially small children.
|
 |
Heartworm Disease
Heartworms are a very serious problem found in the Gulf Coast region. Our warm, humid climate is ideal for mosquito reproduction and as such, we see a high incidence of heartworm disease in dogs, cats and ferrets. Even indoor pets need to be on year round heartworm preventative. Heartworm disease undetected or left untreated may result in serious disease or death of your pet.

Blood Chemistries and Hematology
Our in-hospital laboratory allows us to provide rapid pre-anesthetic screening of all surgical patients, as well as complete blood counts and wellness profiles. These tests provide crucial information concerning your pet's internal organs such as the liver, gall bladder, kidneys, pancreas, bone marrow, and immune system.
|
 |
Urinalysis and Early Renal Disease
A urinalysis is one of the best tests for the detection of kidney problems such as infection, stone-forming crystals, diabetes and early kidney failure. It can also help identify problems with the liver, adrenal glands and other internal organs.

Radiology and Ultrasound On Site
We utilize radiographs (x-rays) and ultrasound to provide our doctors with additional internal information about our patients. We have the equipment and technology to perform these diagnostic tests on-site.

Training
One important aspect often overlooked by new pet owners is training and socialization of new puppies. To become a well behaved member of your family, it is very important that your puppy receive basic obedience training and be well socialized. Pets that are not exposed to this experience early, in the formative months, are much more likely to have behavior problems. Our hospital sponsors a seven week program of puppy kindergarten classes for your new pet. In these classes, your puppy will learn basic skills such as sit, stay, heel, come and how to walk on a leash. In addition, you will learn techniques how to help your pet relax while being handled. This will become a great asset to you later on, when you want to trim your puppy's nails, give him/her a bath or clean the ears. It also makes for much more enjoyable trips to the veterinarian, the park or any other travel destination. For more information, or to sign up for classes, please contact our office. Puppies need time, training and lots of love and attention. They also offer a class for non-puppies and an advanced class as well.

Vaccinations
Vaccinations are an important aspect of your pet's preventive medical care. Puppies and kittens are born with a limited immunity from their mother. In order for it to develop, it must be stimulated to develop protective antibodies. It is crucial that puppies and kittens receive a full compliment of vaccines in order to receive the protection they will need as adults. Periodic boosters are then necessary to maintain the immunity. In adult and older pets, the doctors at Bay Glen Animal Hospital will obtain information regarding your pet's risk of exposure and lifestyle activities. With this information, we can recommend which vaccines are appropriate for your pet and how frequently they should be administered. There is still a wide diversity of opinion regarding the ideal vaccination protocol. Our doctors and staff continuously monitor the latest advances in research and clinical trials to recommend the best treatment protocol possible for your pet.

Nutrition
Proper nutrition plays an important role in your pet's health throughout its life. Whether your pet is a growing puppy or kitten, an active adult pet, or an aging "senior citizen", nutrition plays a key factor in all stages of life. More information is being uncovered daily about how proper nutrition can prevent many disease processes. Puppies and kittens require the nutritional supplements found in high energy growth diets. Adult pets frequently suffer from medical conditions such as kidney or liver disease, urinary problems, obesity, heart disease and diabetes. Many of these can be greatly alleviated with the proper diet and continued medical support and monitoring. If you are unsure which diet is right for your pet, be sure to discuss it with one of our doctors.

Behavior And Socialization
A well socialized pet is a pleasure. We can help with socialization and behavior issues. Early behavioral training is an asset for all dogs, from "puppy kindergarten" classes, to advanced training. Our doctors also do behavioral consultations with owners and pets for behavioral problems. From excessive barking, aggression and destructive issues with dogs to cats with inappropriate urination habits, our goal is to offer solutions for your pet's behavior problems. A physical exam is the first step to rule out medical problems. Once it is determined that the problem is behavioral, we will schedule an in depth behavioral consultation to discuss ways to modify and change the pattern of adverse behavior.
